So, what’s the truth; Is VIPKid legit or a scam to be avoided?
Let’s dive into the review together to find out…
What Is VIPKid
VIPKid is an online platform that focuses on teaching ESL in China through a virtual classroom setting for both students and teachers. It mainly focuses on children aged between 4 and 12 years.
This company uses a business model that’s similar to other online ESL platforms like DadaABC and Qkids. According to WHOIS.com , the domain “vipkid.com” was registered on 25th June 2004 with the registrant based in Bei Jing, China.
However, Wikipedia info indicates that VIPKid was established in 2013. Anyway, the company has been performing well since the day it was launched.
This made it receive international awards, such as The Top 21 Global Innovation Award and the US-China Entrepreneurship Leader Award. I was eager to provide the links to these awards, but unluckily I wasn’t able to get any information that confirms this is true.
I’m not saying that it isn’t true, but maybe my research wasn’t deep enough to reach the targeted information that confirms it.
But they can claim about their major investors like Kobe Bryant, who is indicated on their website and you can confirm that from there.
So, does it works the way they claim it to? And if so, can a teacher make a real income from it?
In the next section of my VIPKid review, I’m going to tell you exactly how this program works so you can see how you can make money with it as a teacher.
Let’s move on…
How VIPKid Works
The first thing you need to do is to sign up to create a VIPKid account. In there, you’ll get some basic questions to answer in order to proceed.
During the procedure, you’ll be able to learn more about teaching with VIPKid and teaching online.Becoming a VIPKid teacher is not that easy.
They require you to have a Bachelor’s Degree with no exceptions, which is a good thing for both students and teachers who they hire to work there. So, if you meet their standards, you’ll be taken through an interview followed by a demo lesson process to enable you to demonstrate activities such as how well you’ll respond to questions from students, manage your time, and most importantly, how good is your ESL teaching skills.
In summary, their application process passes through five stages before one becomes a VIPKid teacher.
⦁ Submission of a resume
⦁ About 30 minutes interview
⦁ Introduction to teaching, which takes up to 3 days
⦁ Mock class for about 6 days
⦁ You sign a contract and upload your teaching documents
Finally, you become a Full-Fledged VIPKid teacher after which you’ll be signed some specific areas of evaluation that include;
As a VIPKid teacher, you’ll have to manage your class either by encouraging underperforming students to do well or by rewarding performing students to boost their morale, which eventually encourages other students to do the same.
Here, teachers need to be prepared for the lessons before class. All the activities you’re going to tackle in class should be scheduled, including fans and stories, which are out of the topic and would help your students understand you.
Effective Timing and Pacing of Classes
Here, teachers plans and arrange the pacing and timing of classes he/she has to teach. Students’ participation and adaptation to classes they have to attend depending on the teacher’s schedule, and this is crucial because they’ll have to meet at the same time.
How the teacher relates to students in the class (such as good greetings or introducing sessions with good moods) establishes students’ teacher relationships. So, as a good teacher, you need to maintain a good relationship throughout the lesson.
The teacher demonstrates a liveliness level that’s suitable for different parts of the lesson, such as reading, activity, introductions, etc. This breaks the monotony and keeps students energetic during the lesson.
Here, the teacher illustrates the purposes of the lesson, i.e., what students should expect at the end of the lesson. This brings a clear picture of what the entire lesson will entail.
The best thing about VIPKid is that their tasks are easy to complete. You’re given all the lessons and allowed to teach the course the way you like.
Later, you’ll give your view regarding your students.Additionally, the platform gives assignments, tests, and grading papers, meaning that you don’t have to worry about that.
Even though some comments claim that only 10%of applicants get hired, but I really don’t know if that’s correct or not because it’s again clear that they just don’t hire anyone unless you meet their criteria.
So, if you qualified to be a VIPKid teacher, how can you get paid? Let’s move directly to the next section of my VIPKid review to find out.
How Do You Get Paid In VIPKid
When it comes to payments, VIPKid has a great status for paying its contractors fully and on time. Their usual payments rates range from $14 up to $18 in an hour with some added incentives.
The normal payment rate depends on the teacher’s credentials plus the deo class performance, and incentives are applied to each half-hour rate. Therefore, the base rates range between $7 and $9 per half-hour (equivalent to $14 – $18 per hour) plus other incentives that include:
⦁ Incentive of Participation: Usually up to $1 based on teaching according to the schedule and your punctuality throughout the lesson.
⦁ Incentive of Finished Class: This incentive depends on how many students book your lessons for each month, which also adds up to the number of classes you teach in a month. VIPKid uses this to determine your teaching quality.
So far, if you add up your salaries to incentives, your total earnings will range from $14 to $22 in a single hour. And some teachers report being making consistently $100 in a day.
Besides, VIPKid offers some periodic bonuses to teachers for meeting certain criteria. They also have a referral program for teachers to snowball their earning potential.
Due to the high and increasing number of students, VIPKid always seeks new teachers to accommodate them.So as a teacher, if you refer a new teacher who finishes the application process successfully and teaches their first class, you’ll earn a $100 one-time commission.
Once you earn, VIPKid will pay you through direct deposit once or twice per month as you opt.The deposits are made from the company’s office in San Francisco, US, meaning there are no problems when it comes to wire transfers or even international deposits.
They’re forthright just like any direct deposits you’d have with any other employer. That’s all about how VIPKid works and how you can earn money as a teacher.
Now, let’s see how much it costs to join their opportunity.
Ultimately, there is nothing you pay to become a VIPKid teacher. They only need you to meet some of their requirements, which are;
⦁ At least a bachelor’s degree.
⦁ Teaching K-12 experience, especially in Canada or the U.S., will add you chances.
⦁ Renewable contract of 6 months.
GOOD VS BAD
⦁ High pay.
⦁ Very flexible, meaning you can choose when to teach.
⦁ Offers additional bonuses.
⦁ Offers training and workshops to the teachers.
⦁ Have continuous improvements.
⦁ Communicative and supportive community.
⦁ Contracts can be renewed.
⦁ Teaching timings don’t favor other countries like the U.S due to different time zones.
⦁ High taxes.
⦁ Lack of health insurance.
⦁ It seems biased due to its focus on a bachelor’s degree.
⦁ It does not support a Smartphone or Tablet.
The founder and CEO of VIPKid are Cindy Mi. Since her childhood, Mi was naturally interested in education and would even use her lunch money to buy magazines and cassettes to teach herself English.
At the age of 14, she had a very bad experience with a math teacher in a new school located at Harbin, North-eastern China. This pushed her to help children develop a love of education as she began to teach them at the age of 15.
She later dropped out of high school at the age of 17 and co-founded ABC English tutoring company together with her uncle.
Mi attended the Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business, where she got an MBA.
Later, she joined Cornell Johnson Graduate School of Management in the US as an exchange student. She had a great experience at Johnson, which later inspired her to come up with the ideas that eventually resulted in VIPKid.
She was fascinated by the possibility of connecting students and teachers in real-time, which she said was so engaging.
Now, Mi has spoken at Boao Forum for Asia’s Annual Conference 2018, TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco, OZY Fest, ASU+GSV Summit, and Y Combinator’s Startup School at Tsinghua University in Beijing, among many others.
She has received rewards such as the ASU + GSV Summit 2019 Power of Women Award. Besides, Cindy Mi was named as one of the 2018 Forbes Emergent 25: The Women Making Their Mark in Asia’s Enterprises, one of Glassdoor’s Top 100 CEOs in 2019, and number one on the list of “50 Female Entrepreneurs Everyone Should Know” by Crunchbase, among others.
So, from what we can see, the founder of VIPKid seems to be very experienced with a good reputation. Now, let’s see what the users of this platform are saying.
What Are Users Saying About VIPKid
First, I’d like to tell you that it’s essential to see what the real users of any program or product are saying before buying into it. This helps you to get a clear picture of what to expect to get or find out once you buy it.
It also helps you to determine whether the program is really working for people as claimed. That said, I did deep research to find out what the real users of VIPKid are saying about it and found out that many are making money with it, and it seems like a great place to work.
For instance, they have an average rating of 4/5 after 752 employee reviews on Indeed.com with more positive reviews than negative ones, such as;
Nonetheless, some folks still think it’s a waste of time since they got no jobs…
When you check out VIPKid on GlassDoor.com, you’ll see that they have an average rating of 4.3/5 after 2117 reviews at this time of writing. GlassDoor named them as one of the Top 10 Best Places to Work in the U.S. and Canada in 2020.
As such, there are mixed reviews regarding VIPKid, but most of them are positive. I won’t list all of them here, but you can check them out on the GlassDoor website if interested.
So, overall, the company has a positive reputation, and it seems like most people are benefiting from it. But before you decide to join it, you may want to check out the below ugly facts, so continue reading…
Ugly Truths Revealed
1. Undermanaged Support System!
Some independent contractors who worked in the last contracts had reported that it’s very hard to get any questions or concerns to be replied by the company. Ultimately, the company takes too long to respond.
2. Contract Cancellation Policy!
When you sign any contract, you’re given 6 official cancellations. If you feel like you want to cancel any of your contracts, you can do it within the first two weeks as they recommend.
Any time you don’t attend any class for any reason, you have to inform VIPkid two hours before the class that you won’t show up to enable you to cancel that class. You’ll be deducted $10 for doing this.
If you exceed the cancellation limit, VIPKid will terminate your contract.
3. Unreliable Source of Income!
Even though they claim to have many contracts for teachers, the fact is you won’t always have work or booked classes all the time, and sometimes you might not have.
This kind of pattern makes it an unpredictable source of income, so it’s always preferable to have other sources of income just in case.
However, some teachers have made VIPKid their fulltime income source, but that’s after working with them part-time for quite some time, I guess. This means that you can start working part-time there, and if you find it suits you most, you can opt to turn it to your full-time income stream.
4. Not That Flexible As It Claims!
For teachers to teach, they have to submit their hours of availability a month in advance. If you may have a personal emergency within the month of application, it’s hard to cancel your classes. The company may fire you for doing so.
Are You Tired Of Scams?
Is VIPKid A Pyramid Scheme
In simple terms, no, VIPKid is not a pyramid scheme. It’s an online company that hires teachers to teach English and reward their current teachers for helping them get new teachers.
They’re constantly searching for new teachers to serve their high and increasing number of students. That said, the current VIPKid teachers earn $100 for recruiting new teachers and helping them to go through the application process.
This reward is given once the recruit teaches their first class.Probably, this is the reason why some people think that VIPKid is a pyramid scheme.
So, why do I say it isn’t a pyramid/Ponzi scheme? A pyramid scheme is a company that normally requires new recruits to pay some fees and uses this money to pay the people who recruited them.
Such companies are illegal in most countries worldwide and don’t last long. Some good examples may include:
On the contrary, VIPKid doesn’t require new members to pay for anything. You just apply, get interviewed, and get paid if hired.
The compensation is for helping the new teachers to go through the application process (which is fairly daunting and complex) rather than a normal referral commission. VIPKid offers very little support to new teachers, and that’s why it pays such a good amount for the referrals.
Additionally, VIPKid teachers don’t have to refer anyone. They can concentrate only on teaching their students for an income and even make it their full-time job.
I mean, it’s entirely optional to recruit new teachers. This is different from a pyramid scheme where members only earn through recruiting new people into the program.
Of course, you can increase your earnings by combining both teaching and recruiting.
Anyway, I hope you understand why I say VIPKid is not a pyramid scheme, don’t you? Now, let’s head on to the next section of my VIPKid review and find out if it’s legit.
Is VIPKid Legit
What comes in your mind so far? Is VIPKid legit or a scam? I’ve identified VIPKid as a platform aiming at spreading the English language onto the non-English speaking world, which is very important because this may eradicate the language barrier.
After watching some videos and reading some articles claiming VIPKid to be a scam, I wanted to join in on the fun. But so far from my findings, VIPKid is very legit and not a scam.
Even though they are experiencing some challenges and growing pains, VIPKid is a legit side hustle for teachers to sell their skills and education techniques to make money online. Some have turned it to be a full-time job and earn a decent income from it.
Indeed, online teaching has been practiced by many teachers for a while, but it’s just the start of this pattern. The future of education will be online and will include the application of technology like virtual reality, as was suggested by expert Peter Diamandis and I tend to support that.
Virtual schools may become the better option when you consider the cost of building and maintaining many campuses together with infrastructures such as roads, water, electricity, public transit, and many others that will be needed to supports this kind of education system. Online teaching also is important in nations with growing economies due to low implementation and maintenance costs.
But if you’re unable to get hired by VIPKid or feel like it’s not the best place for you, you can still find other better options of making money online, such as the following…
