doTERRA Review Summary

Product Name: doTERRA

Website: doterra.com

Price: $35 to join + $100/month Autoship

Recommended: YES/NO

Summary:

doTERRA is a legitimate network marketing business that allows you to make money online by recruiting new members into their system and selling their products. They mostly sell essential oils, weight loss, personal care products, and other supplements. However, this company is not exceptional from the MLM norm where it’s tough for you to make a reasonable income with it. Since their products are expensive and hard to sell, the only way to earn with doTERRA is to do a lot of recruiting. Their distributors tend to use deceptive marketing tactics, and this makes the company look like a scam. Though it’s not a scam or a pyramid scheme, I don’t recommend this program to you, and I’m going to explain everything in this review. So, keep reading to find out all the truth.

I also think it’s good to mention that I’m not affiliated with this program in any way.

I’m just here to give you my unbiased doTERRA review to reveal everything you need to know before joining this company.

Without wasting time, let’s dive into the review!

What is doTERRA?

doTERRA is a multi-level marketing (MLM) company that was founded in 2008 and based in Utah.

It operates in the health and wellness industry, focusing on providing alternative supplements using numerous Essential Oils with healing power.

According to the company, they are associated with hospitals and health experts who are using their oil to experiment with alternative healing methods.

However, doTERRA’s products are worth to be studied.

This is because this company has a real product that’s also claimed to be effective, unlike many illegal pyramid schemes.

Yes, they have many products such as Lemon, Lavender, Peppermint, among others.

One of the primary direct competitors of this company is another Essential Oil MLM known as Young Living.

It came into existence in 1993 while doTERRA was founded in 2008.

What’s interesting about this is that the founders of doTERRA include David Stirling and former Young Living’s executives, distributors, and employees.

This means that doTERRA is mimicking techniques that are already working for Young Living and using them to create this company.

However, it’s not bad to be a copycat provided they improve even than the existing ones, do you agree?

After all, even the older companies have no guarantee of being better.

Anyway, let’s proceed and see how doTERRA works, its products as well as the business opportunity it offers.

How doTERRA Works

First of all, let’s start with the products offered by doTERRA.

Initially, the company began as an Essential Oil company but later stretched out its product line to include other products.

Some of these include:

Essential Oils – Include both Proprietary Blends (e.g., serenity, elevation, and peace) and Single Oils (e.g., lemon, peppermint, and lavender).

Personal Care – Include body care, hair care, and skincare products.

Supplements – Include daily vitality, vegetables & fruits, women’s & children’s supplements, etc.

Weight Loss – Include metabolic gum, soft gels, meal replacement, shakes, etc.

doTERRA Breathe Series – Include respiratory drops, vapor stick, and other things that help with your respiratory and breathing issues.

doTERRA On Guard Series – Include laundry detergent, hand wash, toothpaste, etc.

DigestZen – These are essential oils and supplements for people who have digestive problems.

Other products comprise of essential oil diffusers as well as other related accessories/gadgets.

Those are some of the main products of doTERRA.

The company claimed that its products are CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade; thus, their products aren’t just pure but have real healing impacts on your body.

Nonetheless, the issue is that no associations or authorities have accredited this claim.

Take a look at this post.

You’ll see that the therapeutic impact of essential oils is just a marketing strategy that’s a lie.

FDA has never certified such a thing as therapeutic essential oils!

doTERRA has registered a trademark themselves for their own oils’ purification and distillation process.

I don’t mean that the essential oils offered by this company are useless.

They do have their positive health impacts.

What I mean is that the oils aren’t as magical as claimed by their distributors while trying to sell you their products to make money.

Now that we’ve looked at their products let’s see how you can make money with doTERRA.

How To Make Money With doTERRA

doTERRA is similar to other MLM companies in that it offers you 2 main ways to make money with their program, which are:

Selling their products to make retail commissions.
Recruiting new people to your downline and earn several bonuses.

Nevertheless, you first need to pay a registration fee of $35 to get started with this business.

This price is fairly reasonable when compared to most other MLM’s that charge $100’s to get started.

Then, you’re formally acknowledged as “doTERRA’s Wellness Advocates,” also known as distributors.

After that, you’re required to spend a minimum of $100 per month on their products so that you can remain eligible for sales commissions.

This is pretty common for MLM companies and is why I don’t like them.

doTERRA’s Compensation Plan

According to their compensation plan, doTERRA allows you to earn money in four main ways:

Retail Bonus – You get a 25% commission from all your retail sales.

Fast Start Bonus – Earn a higher percentage from your first-three downline levels within the first 60 days (20% for Level 1, 10% for Level 2, and 5% for Level 3).

Power of Three Bonus – Earn extra cash bonuses of $50, $250 or $1,500 if you and/or your downline members recruit three successful downlines and meet the necessities.

Unilevel Bonus – Earn a certain percentage of your downlines’ overrides up to 7 levels downwards.

True residual income happens to come in the unilevel bonus. doTERRA differs from other related companies in that the percentage of your unilevel commissions gets higher as you go downwards.

As you probably know, the compensation plan for most MLM’s is normally very complicated.

doTERRA Pricing

As I mentioned earlier on, it costs $35 to join doTERRA and become their advocate.

Then, you’ll be paying membership fees of $25 per year for the subsequent years.

There is also the Enrollment Kit that costs $150-$2,750, which will get you some products and samples to use while demonstrating to your first clients.

Then, there is the Personal Volume (PV) that costs $50/month (50PV) for the first rank and $100/month (100PV) for the subsequent ranks.

There are monthly purchases that aren’t compulsory, provided you achieve a certain amount of personal volume for you to be eligible for the unilevel commissions.

In short, you’ll need to have the minimum purchases or around $100/month to receive commissions.

Who Is doTERRA Meant For (And Not For)?

doTERRA is intended for people interested in Essential Oils, Personal Care, Weight Loss, and other related products that it offers.

Their products have some positive health effects, so they’re probably good for human consumption.

Being in the business for over 10 years and 42 complaints on the BBB in the last 3 years, I think they aren’t so bad.

doTERRA is also meant for people looking to make money online through multi-level marketing.

This includes people who like or have good experience in recruiting and direct selling.

Those can make a good income with this company.

However, I think their products are rather expensive than other related ones in the market.

For that reason, you may find a hard time buying or even marketing them to make money.

Additionally, the majority of doTERRA’s members end up failing miserably, and this is a red flag.

If you don’t have the right strategies, you’ll easily fall into the bracket of those who fail with this MLM company.

So, I don’t recommend you to join this program and I expound more on this in a moment.

GOOD VS BAD

The Pros

  • The company was accredited with an A+ rating by the BBB (Better Business Bureau) (https://www.bbb.org/us/ut/pleasant-grove/profile/essential-oils/doterra-1166-22243412) in 2017.
  • The membership fees are pretty affordable.

The Cons

  • Deceptive marketing tactics.
  • Costly products.
  • They have several customers’ complaints.
  • Most people fail.

The Owners Of doTERRA

doTERRA was established in 2008 by David Stirling as the founding executive, CEO, and chairman of the company.

Other founding members include Emily Wright, Corey B. Lindley, David Hill, Mark A, Robert J. Young, and Gregory P. Cook.

All these founders were former executives of another company called Young Living, which also sells essential oils through network marketing.

Under the visionary leadership of David Stirling, the company has grown to the largest essential oil company in the world with over $1.5 billion in yearly sales.

David has about three decades of experience in management and executive activities across various industries.

He claims to be greatly satisfied with growing companies and individuals.

David holds a bachelor’s degree and an MBA in business.

The David Eccles School of Business recently honored him as the first-ever recipient of the Distinguished Entrepreneur Award.

Together with his wife, David has nine children.

Ugly Truth Revealed

1. Low Success Rate!

MLM companies have the same fate, and doTERRA is not exceptional.

Very few people who are at the top of the pyramid earn a reasonable income while the rest majority end up failing terribly.

Nearly 95 percent of doTERRA’s distributors are either looking for an exit route or trapped in practically every sale that they commence.

According to their income disclosure statement, 62% of the members earn an average of $27,557 per year.

This is very deceptive and wrong!

Sadly, the truth is that the top leadership ranks are only 1% of the whole distributor network.

All the rest fail to make a sustainable income with doTERRA’s business opportunity.

Look at the following examples of MLM companies:

Earn Easy Commissions
Amway
Isagenix
Profitable Morrows

You’ll realize that low earning potential is a very common thing for the MLM’s.

2. Expensive Products!

The way the company has priced its products raises even more red flags.

The essential oils that you’ll be marketing are normally 3-10 times more costly than other related brands in the market.

This can make it extremely difficult for you to sell these products upon moving past the initial rapture.

Therefore, it may be very hard for you to make money by selling doTERRA’s essential oils and other products.

3. Unsuitable Marketing Tactics!

Since the products are expensive and hard to sell, recruiting becomes the lifeblood of this business.

For this reason, many distributors happen to exaggerate the profitability of the business and the effectiveness of their products.

doTERRA received a warning letter from the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for marketing their products as possible cures for cancer, Ebola, autism, among other conditions in violation of the Food, Drug & Cosmetic Act.

Though this kind of thing is common for MLM companies, it’s another sign that people are dreadfully looking to recruit people into the business and make sales.

4. Customer Complaints!

Although doTERRA has an A+ rating on the BBB, they have many complaints mostly related to their products and billing.

They have received 42 complaints in the last 3 years and 14 in the last 12 months.

This is a little better when compared to many other related MLM’s that have tons of customer complaints.

I mean, look at the complaints of the below programs; they have numerous of them and a bad BBB rating.

Plexus
Computer Oasis
Primerica
Optavia

Are You Tired Of Scams?

Yeah, me too! I can show you a legit way to create your online business. Not get quick rich schemes, not a simple online job that will pay you cents, none of those things. I’m about to show you how to create an online business that you will own!!!

Is doTERRA A Pyramid Scheme?

Whether doTERRA is a pyramid scheme depends on how you define one.

According to Wikipedia, however, “a pyramid scheme is a business model that recruits members through a promise of payments or services for enrolling new members into the scheme, instead of supplying investments or product sales.”

The company has a real product to sell, and members do not solely rely on recruitment to generate income.

Although some aggressive doTERRA advocates (who the company can’t always control) push those ethical margins while recruiting, we may not call this company a pyramid scheme.

Additionally, the product seems good regardless of my opinions regarding it, because there’s nothing to make it look like a low-quality one.

But if you look at BBB, 28 out of 42 complaints are related to their products.

However, some MLM’s add a product to appear legit but tie it to their membership.

This means that you have to buy and own the product to become a member, or you have to be a member to access the product.

It’s good to note that doTERRA membership is independent of being a buyer.

Nonetheless, you can buy some products for demonstration and marketing purposes.

Similarly, anyone can buy doTERRA’s products without having to join the company.

Therefore, although many people consider all MLM’s to be some pyramid scheme, doTERRA is not one “legally.”

Is doTERRA A Scam?

Although some of their distributors use deceptive marketing tactics that make it look like a scam (and not only for doTERRA), the company operates within the legal limits of a Multi-Level Marketing company.

They have been operating for over 10 years and have an A+ rating on the BBB with 42 customer complaints in the last 3 years.

Yes, you can make money with doTERRA but don’t forget the fact that the majority of people who join this company failed.

Most of them failed miserably and were left with lot’s of debts because of the monthly order necessity.

Even worse, some lost their friends and families for failing to use the appropriate recruitment techniques.

Those are the reasons that hinder me from recommending this business opportunity to you, although it’s legit.
